Best-Ever English Scones

4 cups flour, sifted
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
pinch of salt
6 tbsp. butter
1 cup milk
1 egg


Preheat oven to 500º. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Cut in butter until grainy in texture. Whisk egg and milk. Add egg mixture to the dry ingredients. Lightly flour a wooden board; knead dough and roll into 2 rounds 1-inch thick. Cut into equal triangles and place on the ungreased baking sheet. Reduce oven temperature to 400º and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
