Best Brownies

Brownies

1/2 cup shortening, butter, or margarine
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla until fluffy. Add eggs, blend well. In another bowl, combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Add to the creamed mixture, blend well. Stir in nuts. Spread in a greased 9-inch square pan. Bake at 350° for 20 - 25 minutes. Cool and frost.

Buttercream Frosting

6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup cocoa
2 2/3 cup powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk (approximately)
1 teaspoon vanilla

In a small bowl, cream butter. Add cocoa and powdered sugar alternately with the milk. Beat to spreading consistency. Blend in vanilla. Spread on cooled brownies.

This recipe was printed in the Milwaukee Sentinel food section back in the 80's. It was a winning recipe from the Wisconsin State Fair. I've been making it since that time.
